September 27th – Elmsford Day

Pres Kevin received a listing of the District Annual Giving and the Elmsford Club Ranked #9 out of #47 Clubs with $137.04 per capita

Pres Kevin read a thank you from Jeffrey Coggeshall the 2008 Milt Williams Music Scholarship Receipient.

PROGRAM – Today we had the honor of inducting two new members into the Best Damn Club in the District.

Doria Brown was born into a large family where she was number eight of nine children.  Two months ago she joined Community Mutual Bank and was looking for a group that supports the community.  She heard about the good things that Rotary does both internationally and locally.  She enjoys her position at Community Mutual which has a 120 year history in banking and is customer service oriented.  On a personal level Doria has been married nine years and has a seven year old daughter who is determined that Doria should be working on another sister or brother for her.  Doria appreciates the warmth of our club members and has enjoyed interaction with our group.

Bryan Mohammed – Bryan has visited our club over the past two years and decided that he would like to join us.  Bryan is employed by Walmart as a Manager at Sams Club in Elmsford.  Walmart believes and values the community and is very involved.  Bryan has been with Walmart for four years and prior to that was employed by Home Depot for twelve years.

Bryan has been married for twenty five years and has three children two of which have graduated college and no longer live at home.  However, every Sunday they all have dinner together and it is then that they gather their allowances, car payments, etc.

Bryan is happy to be a part of the Elmsford Rotary Club from where contributions are made to the community and to be a part of that is a true value.  Again it is a small world for when Alan was telling Bryan about equipment that we shipped to Trinidad and Tobego  and showed him the pictures from long ago, Bryan was able to name three of the people in that picture.

A big welcome to both Doria and Bryan from all of us.____________________________________________________________________

Maegen Rivera gave us a report on her success during her Freshman Year at the New York Institute of Technology.  She is studying to become an architect and received a 3.5 GPA.  She described how she has gone 36 hours without sleep to achieve those grades.

During her freshman year she completed two big projects; a 16 “ X 18” Crossing Station and a Tenement Museum to illustrate her heritage.

What a small world Maegen must have thought it was to be sitting at a table with two community businessmen, Lou Del Rosario and Bryan Mohammed both of which she has worked for.  Maegen has promised to return for another lunch and display her portfolio.

HAPPY BUCKS  - Collected $48.00

Many happy bucks welcoming our two new members:

   .  Doria and Bryan

.  our scholarship recipient Maegen Rivera

.  our guest, Lynwood from Sams Club

   .  for a good summer

   .  for being here today

.  for the first place Mets

50/50 was won by Manny and he pulled the nine of diamonds. The Queen now has a value of $403.84.

BOARD OF DIRECTOR MEETING – Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Location:  Maureen & Tim’s Conference Room – 8:30 AM

                 47 Nepperhan Avenue

                 Elmsford, New York  10523

PROGRAM:

Phil Mazzilli’s Reflection on 98 Years

Phil was born in lower Manhattan on November 17th and within weeks his family relocated to Elmsford where he received his education in Elmsford Public Schools.  For three years after graduation during the prohibition era he ran an out of favor Bar & Grill for this father when ten cents was a day’s pay.

In 1917 his father purchased a hotel and become active in real estate.  In 1928 mortgages ran out and that was the end of his father’s real estate business and as Phil puts it they didn’t have a pot to ……………

In 1933 - he was the Captain of his fire department where he volunteered and while returning from a fire he saw a young lady and elderly woman on the corner holding umbrellas.  It was then that his life changed for the young lady named Sarah became his wife five years later.  Sarah who passed away twenty years ago was a small, quiet woman who was a good wife and mother.

1936 – 1937 – to our delight Phil told us some of his many Golf stories having played professional golf.

1938 he married Sarah and had two sons, Philip who is now a retired CFO of Equafax and Paul who has a career with Morgan Stanley.

He told us about his numerous cruises out of San Francisco, Seattle, Barcelona and Singapore and strongly recommends an Alaskan cruise as one of most beautiful places to visit.

Leave it to Phil to talk about politics and let us know that he was a lifelong Republican who voted Democratic for the first time this year.  Can’t repeat what he said about the Republican in Washington but it did get a good laugh.

Today we got an insight on Phil the Town Assessor of Elmsford for 12 years, the professional golfer (who says if someone puts a golf ball on a tee, he can still hit it better than most), the gambler, the husband, the father, the investor, and the traveler.

Phil is proud to have been a Rotarian for 49 years with perfect attendance.  He has enjoyed the friendships in Rotary over the years and thanked us for being good to him and for getting along with a little old man who doesn’t know what he is doing some time.  Phil we thank you for being a Rotarian who demonstrates good humor, loyalty and friendship.

Dr. Phil’s advise, “if you live to be 98, spend all your money because the kids will if you don’t’.

Happy Bucks

.  Collected $36.00

.   Maureen – for Phil

.   Tim – for Samantha who has Phil to contend with

.   Alix – for her son who will be returning soon from Japan and who is

facing difficult finals in Buddism. His major is philosophy.  His

original host family left on vacation resulting in relocating with

another family during his testing preparation.

.   Phil for his best friend, Tim, who speaks so well of him.

.   Charlie for being late – for our President who is still here with us after

hosting two weddings and for Phil.

.    Kevin happy that the weddings are over and all the guests have

returned to their homes in different states and locations

.   Joe V. for our speaker , for the lovely ladies, for Alan and for his new

    stereo. (hearing aids that is)

.   Alan – for Joe’s new stereo and if they don’t work out for him Alan will

    take them.

.   Barry for our speaker and after looking at the 25th anniversary journal

for the club found that Alan was actually quite a good looking fellow.

The Village of Elmsford requested a donation from us for the Field Events at their Summer Day Camp.  It was agreed that we would make a donation equal to last year’s.

50/50 was won by Garry who pulled the five of spades. The Queen now has a value of $310.00.

Over the years Doc Fred did many things for our club without anyone knowing because he did it quietly.  Now we, in turn, can give quietly in his name.

Results of Rotary Golf Outing:

Barry reported the financial results of our outing which netted the Club $5,524.00.  Monday morning’s rainy weather turned into a day perfect for golf.  Somers Pointe Golf Club extended us every courtesy and served a great barbecue lunch and ended our day with a delicious cocktail hour followed by a buffet dinner.

Many thanks to all the members who either sponsored a hole or found non member sponsors who made this day successful as well as to Tim, Charlie, Hal, Joe V., April, Martha, and Barry, the donors of great raffle prizes and goody bags for each golfer.  The wine bottles donated by the members made beautiful baskets to which Maureen added chocolates, nuts, cheeses, and golf goodies.

Martha’s contribution of umbrellas with Elmsford Rotary imprinted on them was a huge success.

Last but not least a round of applause for Barry for organizing the outing, and making it all work.  WAY TO GO BARRY!!!!

Ideas for next year include discussing a date for July of 2009 at next week’s board meeting, booking the date, printing the golf outing pamphlets, and getting people to lock in their foursomes early.  We are already looking at an additional 4 foursomes………..also encouraging members to attend the dinner.

OPEN FORUM

Inasmuch as we did not have a speaker this week we had some extra time to discuss the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Elmsford Club.  The anniversary is actually in February but it seemed to be unanimous that we would combine this celebration with next year’s Installation Dinner in June.  Jeannette suggested a silent auction and raffles.  Maureen who is chairperson for the Installation Dinner is looking for volunteers to join her and Jeannette to organize this gala affair.
